SUSTAINABLE FOOD SECURITY
Our competencies and services are focused on industrial sectors which are dedicated to enabling global food security for approx. 10 billion people in 2050.
OUR FOCUS INDUSTRIES
In the light of limited arable land, the future of agriculture should be shaped with innovative solutions so that the growing world population can be provided with adequate amounts of high quality food, feed, and renewable natural resources. In order to make this immense increase in agricultural productivity happen, it must be pursued in a sustainable way aided by digital technology.
SEEDSHighly complex crop varieties developed for specific environmental conditions enable efficient and effective use of area and resources, and thus considerably contribute to worldwide food security. At the core of food production, seeds are a key factor. However, in light of hybrid varieties, social concerns on a loss of biodiversity and highly dependent farmers shape the public debate and breeding increasingly comes to the forefront. Research and development, especially in promising areas such as genetic engineering, are consequently subject to broader justification and explanation of use. Based on extensive experience in stakeholder communication, we jointly develop with our clients measures and targeted messaging for meeting controversies and increasing transparency based on scientific findings. Thanks to this approach, companies can increase public acceptance for their products and secure future market access.
AGRICULTURAL MACHINERYDigital transformation is particularly shaping agricultural machine technology. Because the natural capacity of agricultural resources is so important for intensive agriculture, responsibility and digital crop production must go hand in hand. Digitally-based efficiency improvements and sustainable agricultural practices are not mutually exclusive, but rather they must be jointly understood and implemented. Therefore, we at ELFIN translate and integrate sustainable approaches and factors into the further development of precision farming and specific system solutions with our clients. The emergent added value is enunciated in a corresponding communication and demonstration explaining the principles and effects on both, efficiency and sustainability. Agricultural machine manufacturers can, as a result, strengthen the credibility and customer preference for distinctive, sustainably-oriented products and services.
FERTILIZERThe application of fertilizer in modern agriculture is a key factor for soil fertility and nutrient supply for crops. Amid increasing ground water pollution and emissions, proper handling during storage and application of fertilizers becomes more and more important. Economical dosing based on crop requirements is the key to preventing sever damage to soil, water bodies, climate and biodiversity. ELFIN supports clients in transforming routine applications based on best practices and empowering farmers, which is the foundation for leading the public discussion on the significance of efficient, demand-oriented and proper fertilizer usage. Through this, contributions on a more sustainable farming practice can be enhanced and demonstrated to key stakeholders.
CROP PROTECTIONSimilar to fertilizer, there is a high risk of potential damage from crop protection products before, during, and after application. This is especially critical, because the manufacturer has less influence on responsible product use locally and, consequently, limiting environmental exposure of crop protection products and their active substances only to areas to be treated. Therefore, safe use plays a specific role for humans and the environment. Through our solutions, ELFIN helps clients to integrate and meet sustainability requirements, and demonstrably drive down impactful practices of crop protection product use. Based on this, negative side effects on the environment and people can be significantly reduced.
FOOD PRODUCTIONThe food industry is constantly driven by lowering costs, increasing supply, and maintaining continuous growth. The majority of food is industrially produced and processed, which is perceived negatively by an increasing number of consumers. Health trends, ethical requirements to nutrition and a series of food scandals raise the importance of sustainable food production – social and environmental aspects of food production are gaining significance. This prompts food producers to become more efficient, resource-friendly, and socially acceptable. In doing so, sustainable business practices are increasingly implemented across all steps of the value chain and transformed into measurable results, which positively influences consumer purchasing decisions. Measurable positive environmental and social product characteristics are credibly conveyed to the public and made more tangible for consumers. Based on strategic directions, we identify, together with our clients, relevant fields and questions of sustainability and operationalize key aspects, such as production methods and working conditions, for implementation along the entire value chain. Next to this, we implement a credible communication, which articulates sustainability attributes as central proof and selling points in order to increase stakeholder’s trust in our clients, and long-term business success.
We support our clients at the interface between strategy, implementation and scale-up, turning ideas into operative results, and making key stakeholders understand the added value behind it.
